Puzzle Design Tournament is an online and annual event. It's simply a "send one-solve multi optimization puzzles"
Take the number of participants (designers) as "n" for the rules below.
RULES & PROGRESS
A.1. Anybody who sends an optimization puzzle will be considered to be a participant of the tournament. There will at most be 20 participants, so the quality of the puzzle design will be important to choose these participants. This number may be less, even though submission count matches 20 or more.
A.2. Teams are not allowed to participate.
A.3. Help of any person, computer, tool etc. are not allowed while solving the puzzles.
Only pencil, paper and similar items are permitted.
A.4. Participants agree to be rated by Puzzle Ratings, and should enter their names and country names in Latin characters only.
Calendar (for 2005)
B.1. Deadline of puzzle submission: Last minute of 3 June, 2005 (GMT+02).
B.2. Publication of the puzzles: 10 June, 2005.
B.3. Deadline of sending answers: Last minute of 2 July, 2005 (GMT+02).
C.1. Only optimization puzzles will be allowed.
That is a puzzle having multiple solutions in value and the aim is to reach to an optimum solution.
It's suggested to prepare a puzzle which can get 6 values at least, in the tournament (See rule L).
C.2. One puzzle for each designer will be allowed.
C.3. No team work is allowed.
C.4. The puzzle must be an original design or a variation of an earlier original design of that designer.
C.5. Variations of other optimization puzzles are also welcome. But not puzzles like a regular "Minimum Squares", a regular "Sliding Puzzle with minimum moves" etc.
C.6. The puzzle must be language and culture-neutral. It must be solved without any knowledge that can give unfair advantage to any participant.
C.7. The puzzle must be unpublished.
C.8. Any puzzle design may be rejected by the organizer.
Design Publication and Answer Checking
D. Sending designs:
D.1. Puzzle designs will be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org.
D.2. Puzzles must be in English with all needed information clearly instructed.
D.3. There is no need to prepare images if you can clearly identify everything with text. If you want to send images, gifs are prefered.
D.4. Each designer must specify an answer key for his/her puzzle so that other participants can send their answers in simple text, and the designer can check the answers easily.
E. Publication of designs:
E.1. All of the puzzles will be published anonymously, in a single PDF file. The file will be available on the right column of this page to be downloaded.
E.2. There will be no modification on the puzzle instructions by the organizer. Modifications will be done by the designer after the solving time begins (see rule F). Though, the organizer can suggest some little changes.
F.1. In the 3-week solving time, any questions about the puzzles will be sent to email@example.com. The organizer then writes to the designer about a question if needed.
F.2. In case of any update on the puzzles, each participant will receive a message via a special e-mail list for the puzzle designers. All participating designers will automatically be subscribed to this list.
F.3. There will also be an errata page on the web collecting all these info about puzzles. The link to the errata page will be on the right column of this page.
G. Sending the answers:
G.1. Answer for each puzzle will be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org with the answer key, the name and the country name of the participant who is sending the answer.
G.2. Answers for a puzzle will be transferred to that puzzle's designer anonymously. Designer should verify if the answer is valid and the score of the puzzle in three days.
H.1. Each participant will have 100 ratings to be distributed (in integers) among the other (n-1) puzzle designs. Ratings will be distributed in respect to the enjoyment while solving the puzzle and the originality of the puzzle design.
H.2. A participant can not give more than 20 ratings to a single puzzle.
H.3. A participant can give 0 points to a puzzle.
H.4. A participant must distribute all of his/her 100 ratings.
H.5. Ratings will be sent to email@example.com in a single message until the deadline of sending answers.
I. Design score: (Total ratings collected)x(n/4)
J. Solving score:
J.1. For each puzzle, top five solutions will get 100, 80, 65, 55, 50 points respectively.
J.2. Bonus: 60 points will be shared by the participants who get the best solution submitted in the tournament.
K. Total score: (Design score)+(Solving score)
Number of different values for a puzzle
L. In case of getting less than six values in the tournament for a puzzle;
L.1. Worst value will get 25 points.
L.2. The other values will get the lowest points in the set "100, 80, 65, 55, 50".
L.3. 10% of the designer's design score will be cut for each missing value under six.
Example: If a puzzle gets only four different values in the tournament;
a. The four solutions (values) will get 65, 55, 50, 25 points respectively. Additionally, 60 points will be shared by the participants who get the best solution in the tournament.
b. 20% will be cut from the designer's design score. That is, his new (official) design score will be 80% of his older one.
M. Three different ranking tables will be prepared and posted to this web page after the deadline as soon as possible (in a week depending on the designers' checkings).
M.1. Total score ranking will be the official result of the tournament.
M.2. Design score ranking will also be posted.
M.3. Solving score ranking will also be posted.
